What it tells you

This report shows you the number of requests for each title directly from a selected publisher over a selected period of time both in total and with backfile use subtracted. It also shows you GOA (Gold Open Access) usage and usage via gateways and host intermediaries (ingentaconnect (Publishing Technology), SwetsWise, EbscoHOST, Ebsco EJS and proQuest) to provide a complete picture of "current" usage.

In this report, JUSP subtracts from the JR1 report backfile usage of each title as reported in the JR1a, and also adds in gateway and host intermediary usage, to save any further calculations to arrive at a figure for total usage of a current deal. The report also subtracts GOA usage from both "direct current" and "total current" usage from each title as reported in the JR1GOA.

How to run the report

1. Log in to the portal and go to on Journals (R4)
2. Select JR1 reports excluding backfile usage and GOA (Gold Open Access)
3. Select publisher
4. Select date range by month and year
5. Click Generate

How to interpret the data

This report enables you to see how much use is being made of your current deal or subscribed titles (including usage through gateways and intermediaries), as against use of any backfile or archive collections you have acquired separately.

The 'Direct JR1 minus JR1a and GOA' column shows the usage via the publisher, excluding backfiles and GOA (Gold Open Access) usage.

The 'total current' column shows all usage of the current deal, excluding backfiles and including (where applicable) intermediaries.

The 'total current - GOA' column shows all usage of the current deal, excluding backfiles and GOA (Gold Open Access) and including (where applicable) intermediaries.

The JR1/JR1a reports are likely to contain a number of titles that are not in the deal or collection you subscribe to for various reasons. You are therefore advised to treat the nil usage shown in these reports with some caution.

The JR1 report includes usage of archive or backfile collections which are also recorded in JR1a.

The JR1a report is for archive or backfile collections which are generally separately purchased. Not all publishers/aggregators supply JR1a reports. Some publishers have ceased to supply this report since Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources made its production optional.

The JR1 GOA (Gold Open Access) report includes usage of Gold Open Access articles and became a required report with COUNTER Release 4.

If you have added details of your core (subscribed) titles, these will be highlighted by a star in the table. Titles included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) will also be highlighted with the DOAJ symbol.

Most summary reports in JUSP include intermediary figures as given in this report, either included in the totals or shown separately. This is always made clear in the notes for each report.

Please note that Ebsco EJS provided usage statistics up to July 2014; after that date usage of all titles accessed via Ebsco EJS comes directly from the publisher.

Top tips for using this report

1. Sort by title for an alphabetical list, or by total to sort by titles with the highest/lowest number of requests in the JR1, JR1a, JR1 minus JR1a or JR1 GOA columns
2. Compare your usage of the current deal with your usage of backfiles for individual titles
3. Add in your usage of titles via gateways and intermediaries to get the full picture of "current" usage
4. View your "current" usage excluding GOA (Gold Open Access)
5. View your subscribed or core titles as starred items if you have marked them up in the core titles area. Sort your report to see your subscribed or core titles first
6. Sort the JR1 GOA column to view usage of fully open access DOAJ titles and of hybrid titles grouped together
7. Click on individual journal titles to see usage of that title across all years for which data are available including accesses via gateways and host intermediaries and via JSTOR if applicable. JR1a (backfile) and JR1 GOA (Gold Open Access) usage are also displayed
8. Select 'View this report with monthly breakdowns included' to see a more detailed analysis of your usage.
