SCONUL returns
What it tells you
Before the transition to COUNTER Release 5 the annual SCONUL statistical return asked libraries to report on the number of full-text article requests (COUNTER JR1 or equivalent) for the academic year 1 August - 31 July. The SCONUL return report helps provide this information for any publishers within JUSP.
How to run the report
- Log in to the portal and go to on Journals (R4)
- Select SCONUL Returns
- Select an individual publisher or all publishers
- Select an academic year (previous years can also be viewed and full data for the most recent year are available from Aug/Sept each year)
- Click Generate
How to interpret the data
The resulting report will give the number of full-text article requests for the specified academic year for each publisher in the portal (or the specified publisher you chose for the report).
Access via intermediaries (ingentaconnect (Publishing Technology), SwetsWise, EbscoHOST, Ebsco EJS and ProQuest) is shown separately. When completing your return, you may find it easier to use the figures in the "Direct" column and add in your total figures from intermediaries as a separate stage.
Most summary reports in JUSP include intermediary figures as given in this report, either included in the totals or shown separately. This is always made clear in the notes for each report.
Please note that Ebsco EJS provided usage statistics up to July 2014; after that date usage of all titles accessed via Ebsco EJS comes directly from the publisher.
Top tips for using this report
- Download the data as a CSV file and combine this with any data from publishers not yet in JUSP before submitting your SCONUL return
- Download data from different academic years to compare usage longitudinally (or look at a glance within JUSP by choosing "All years" in the year dropdown)
- Sort by JR1 Total, JR1a Total or Frontfile to see the publishers with the highest total usage or highest usage of archives or frontfiles
